The First Edition has for sale this magnificent Victorian children’s illustrated book, The Arabian Nights Entertainments, which includes illustrations by W. Heath Robinson, Helen Stratton, A.D. McCormick, A.L. Davies, A.E. Norbury and many others. This is the rare first edition book from 1899.
This is one of the most attractive of the examples of a Victorian Arabian Nights Entertainments book you are likely to see, which has been published by George Newnes Ltd
The bevelled boards measure 8.75 x 10.75 inches (approx), has a green background colour and are decorated with a colour illustration of a man on his knees watching as what appears to be a Genie coming out of a terracotta pot. The lettering reads: “The Arabian Nights with 551 Illustrations”. The spine is also decorated with what appears to be the Genie
The boards are in Very Good condition being complete and very sound with decorations and titling to the Front Board and Spine being very clear. There is slight wear to the top and bottom of the spine; wear to the sides of the spine; slight rubbing to the back board; and a knock to the fore edge of the back board. An attractive set of boards.
There are 472 printed pages, all edge gilt are in Very Good to Near Fine condition with the endpapers browned; and occasional and very light foxing where present – very unusual for a book of this size and age
This is an incredibly large and detailed book giving what appears (and must surely be) all the stories – we have counted 51 Chapters/Stories – that are magnificently illustrated throughout by some of the world’s best illustrators of the day with many by W. Heath Robinson that was published when Robinson was just 27 years of age represents one of the earliest books to be contributed to by the young William Heath Robinson
